Fax services problem

Hi all

Loony wrote this on July 23rd this year:

"i have XP home sp2 and i just started to try and use the fax option.
when i used setup fax in printers and faxes the installation program
kept
coming back with DLL's missing from my PC and XP disk, i carried on
with the
install by trying to install and then missing the DLL's out that i
didnt seem
to have and now fax apperars in P and Fs but gives a error message
saying the
printer is not connected to a server and dissapears.
In add/remove windows components, the program seems to install but the
fax
services box is never ticked, like its not installing right.

things that may have affected this are that my gateway modem was using
an MS
driver rather than the gateway one which i have resolved back to proper
gateway driver.

i tried doing a system restore to yesterday but that didnt make any
difference
now when i go into accessories>comms>fax the box come back with empty
ie no
fax console

how can i solve this so the XPfax works?"

I am now experiencing exactly the same problem with a client's PC. The
resolution given originally was to do with rebuilding a corrupt XP
security database. Is there any easier way to do this, or not?

You can either:

1. Get the hotfix mentioned in KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/
You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP

and install it. Microsoft usually waives any charges for support calls to
get supported hotfixes
listed in Knowledge Base articles.

2. Try this procedure using the Esentutl.exe utility mentioned in the KB
article to recover from security database corruption:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00270202
HP and Compaq Notebook PCs: Unable to Install Windows XP Fax Software

Note that Microsoft does NOT recommend that you use the Esentutl.exe utility
and would prefer you try the hotfix.
