Fax service stopping, no event log recorded

Hello,

I have a SBS 2000 server with the shared fax setup. This has been working
fine in the past. No hotfixes or service packs have been installed.

If I try to use the shared fax from a client (Win2k or WinXP) or the server
I get an error stating "Unable to retrieve information from Fax server". I
can send a fax from the server by printing to the fax printer. I can use
the dialer from the server and make outbound calls fine.

I then noticed that the fax service was not started. A few seconds/minutes
after starting the service it stops again. No error is recorded in the
application log or system log.

I took the modem out of the RAS modem pool and that did not help. I stopped
and started the shared modem service without any difference as well.

On SBS2000, there are two fax services - If you are using the "Microsoft
Shared Fax", then that service need to run, the other "Fax Service" need not
run. When you say connecting from another Win2k or WinXP clients, are these
clients part of the same domain for which the SBS2000 box is the Domain
Controller?
