Fax Problem

Does anyone know why my landline phone receives fax tones when any type of
call comes in?

My landline phone & Fax machine (HP Officejet v40 - All in one) do share one
phone line; although, each phone cord is inserted into a separate phone
adapter unit. The phone cord travels to the fax machine and out of the fax to
my computer windows xp. I have configured the fax machine, but maybe I did
something wrong??

You did something wrong; probably set it to think it has its own line.
Run through the Fax setup again.
