A fax is an analog signal, your cable modem is digital. To use it without
using a service on the internet you mush have a landline ( normal phone
line ), not your VoIP. If you still have the land line connect the fax/data
modem to the phone jack, set up the fax software, & configure the modem. If
you don't have the landline anymore, then the only way is to reinstall the
phone line to use your modem, or subscribe to an internet based fax service,
both are going to cost. This is one reason I am not interested in VoIP.
I use everyday my fax software and my cable internet coonnection. The cable
modem hooked up to the cable line, the fax/data modem hooked up to the phone
jack. This afternoon, I was downloading e-mail (cable), faxing forgotten
paperworkleft at home to my wife at work (phone line), while talking to her
on the cell phone. Normal day sometimes.

| unfortunate you can not send a fax through a cable modem - the two types
of
| network and technology don't "touch" each other. There are some web
services
| that allow you to send faxes via web pages but they often charge.
|
| hope that helps
