fax printer failed

I tried using my fax console this morning and after several minutes of
waiting it comes up and wont work."An attempt to connect to the fax printer
failed.Check the printer connection and try again". well of course the
printer works fine otherwise but trying to install it as the fax printer
gets me nowhere even though its in the list when you go to the fax printer
install window. I can uninstall and reinstall to no avail. I can get various
help windows to come up like from the fax console where it says Refreshing
at the bottom and finally gives up and says All Fax Printers are
Inaccessible. You click on that and get a status box and the right click on
Local and get help windows which are of no help. I cannot get it to see the
printer. It used to work fine when I had a damned HP printer but I finally
got tired of the trouble and ran over it with my truck and got a Canon
printer. Anyway all HP references are removed but I still cant get fax to
work.

The Windows Fax Console works with an analog modem and not a
physical printer. What does HP or Canon have to do with faxing with
the Windows XP Fax applet?
