Fax: possible with external Cardinal fax modem?

Hi-

I'm trying to use an external Cardinal V.34/V.FC 28.8 Data/Fax modem to send
faxes from Win XP, SP1. The modem was recently in service on another
computer (Win 95), so I know it works. It is plugged into the COM1 port, and
the port appears to be working normally. This is my first experience with
fax under XP.

I can see "fax" in the Printers and Faxes window. When I right-click on
"fax" there, and select Properties, there is a very long delay - some
minutes - with nothing happening. Eventually an error window appears

Title: Microsoft Fax
Message: An attempt to connect to the fax printer failed. Check the fax
printer connection and try again.
Button: OK

When I click OK on that window, it is replaced by another

Title: Printer Properties
Message: The 'Microsoft Shared Fax Driver' printer driver is not installed
on this computer. Some printer properties will not be accessible unless you
install the printer driver. Do you want to install the printer driver now?

If I click OK on this window, the Add Printer Driver Wizard comes up, and
all it can do is add drivers for physical printers, given the manufacturer
and model. This of course gets me nowhere.

If I click "Cancel" on the Add Printer Driver Wizard, the properties
dialogue for Fax comes up. It says that the Model is Microsoft Shared Fax
Driver.

Am I barking up the wrong tree?

How did you install Fax in your machine, By any chance did you to connect to
remote Fax printer from SBS 2000 or Windows Server 2003.

Can you try uninstalling Fax (Control panel, Add Remove programs, add remove
windows components, un select fax ) and reinstalling (Control panel, Add
Remove programs, add remove windows components, select fax ) again.
