Fax from Windows programs

Help!

My modem connects to the net without any problems. I have an HP145D Printer/ Copier/ Scanner/ Fax. Windows XP Pro is the operating system

Whenever I try to fax a document from MS Word or other Windows program, I hear the modem dialing, but there is no pickup of the modem phoneline (same as for net); the modem keeps trying to connect, and then I get a messge printed out from the HP145D that there is no answer. No surprise since I did not have a phone line connection

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Clarify what fax software you are using and why you think we could help with
your HP all-in-one hardware device.

You got me. I can receive faxes- I can connect to the net- but whenever I try to send a fax from a windows program the phone line does not connect. If the same modem US Robotics 56K PCI Fax connects when I dialup the net- why won't the fax connect?

Thanks

Fritz,
you are using WinFax [XP windows fax program?] I had a problem with mine,
it only worked sometimes. I uninstalled the program and then reinstalled it
and everything works good now. You might try that.

What exactly happens when you try to send a fax? What error messages do you
receive? That doesn't sound like a modem that is on the Windows HCL list.

Russ,

Thanks for your help. We moved our office and prior to the move everything worked fine so I don't think there is a modem incompatability problem. Now when we fax from windows the modem is ringing the number dialed- but our phone line is not connecting to the modem- after 5-6 rings the printer prints out a report that says "no answer". This is baffling since there is no problem with the modem connecting to thenet thru the same phone line.

Thanks Victor,

I am using the fax program that was embedded with XP pro when we purchased it. In my response to Russ, I point out that the program used to work before we moved to another location. My horrible feeling has been that I have a glitch in the fax program now and your suggestion may be the only solution- albeit a dreaded one.

Still sounds like a modem incompatibility problem.
Unfortunately, Windows XP Fax has proven to be incompatible with many common
modems and drivers, particularly older ones, even if the manufacturers claim
they are "compatible" with Windows XP. Modem incompatibility is not apparent
during installation or the initial setup. It only becomes apparent when you
first try to send or receive a fax. The Fax Service will dial or will answer
an incoming fax but then fail with any of a number of unhelpful error
messages such as "Line is busy," "There is no answer," or "Reception error."
There will be nothing in Event Viewer to give a clue as to where the problem
might lie.

These errors have been nearly impossible to track down. To do so requires
enabling both PSS and debug logging of fax transmissions, both of which
require fairly extensive registry changes. For the time being, the best
advice is to attempt to use XP Fax only if you have a modem that is listed
on the Windows XP Hardware Compatibility List and using the latest drivers.

BTW, you stripped out the rest of the message so I can't see your original
problem. If you are not using Windows XP Fax, then you are still posting in
the wrong place.

quote: "solution- albeit a dreaded one." Uninstalling and reinstalling is
easy! Just go to "add or remove programs" and then add/remove windows
components. uncheck then after removal, recheck add.....

Thanks again for yor help. This entire senario didn't make sense from the beginning--so I actually took a simple approach--ala your first suggestion to plug in the connection. I changed the phone jack on the line from the HP145 and now I can send- but I am getting some error messages on some incoming faxes

Thanks

Russ,

Thanks ever so much for your time and help. This problem has been confusing because all worked fine before we moved. I changed my RJ jack on the phone line from the HP145D and I am once again sending faxes from windows. I seem to have more eror messages on incoming faxes- but I should be able to find out what happened because there is an error no like 242, or 232.

Thanks again
