embedded software with purchase of HP computer included
fax software. The problems I am experiencing lately is
that incoming calls (fax) initiates the fax software, but
after approximately 40 seconds, I get an error that the
incoming fax failed.

Embedded software probably in not Windows XP Embedded OS. This is a wrong NG for this question, and you should probably contact HP
technical support.
