Favorites - Can't Delete!

G

Guest

Hi - can someone help. My poor mother - we found Adware.lop on her computer
- we have removed it using adaware and symantec products. The problem is she
still has a number of folders under "favorites". I can not get rid of them.
I can't drag them to delete and they do not show up under "organize my
favorites". Any ideas.

Hi Bill.

You need to logon with the Administrators account. Then in the File Explorer
find the folder \Documents and settings\All Users\Favorites
You should be able to delete the unwanted sub-folders from there. If not
check the folder attributes (right-click>Properties) for read-only etc.

HI billyboy :)

You don't mention the version of Windows the User has, but, if Rob's advice
does not resolve the issue, try the following and see if it helps:

The Favorites folder may have been corrupted by the Adware.lop that was
removed. Delete the old folder and let Windows create a new one on reboot.
Follow the instructions here:

First, clear the Temorary Internet Files:

Clear the Temporary Intenet Files and delete Cookies.
http://www.pchell.com/support/privacy.shtml

then....

Delete and create a new Favorites folder as per the instructions here
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/answers3.htm#favorites

If still no joy....

CCleaner (History cleaner)
http://www.ccleaner.com/
or
http://www.download.com/CCleaner/3000-2144-10315544.html

Hope this helps.

can make it tough). I did install and run "Hijack This" - here is the log -
anything stand out to you all?

Thanks again,

Billy.

Hi billyboy:)

I an't speak for Don, but, I am not an expert at HJT analysis. You need to
post your HiJackThis log to this forum and let the experts there analyize it
for you. Then, after you have posted your log, post a copy of the link back
here in this thread. We can follow ffom here.

Hi,
Did Mom try Messenger Plus (not a Microsoft product) from
http://www.msgplus.net/ or another download site? Lop is part of the
"sponsor software." You can install Messenger Plus without the sponsor
software if you watch for the accept/refuse dialog during installation.
More at http://www.msgplus.net/help_faq.php

Uninstalling/reinstalling MP without the sponsor software *may* remove
Lop.

Otherwise... these aren't conventional Favorites. They're being created
at
startup by one or more files located in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data
or
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data

The best course of action would be to get help with a HijackThis log.
Start
at
http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=4075 Then go to
http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm Work through the preliminary cleaning
steps then post a HijackThis log to the forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30

Hope this helps,
Don

Hi - can someone help. My poor mother - we found Adware.lop on her computer
- we have removed it using adaware and symantec products. The problem
is she
still has a number of folders under "favorites". I can not get rid of them.
I can't drag them to delete and they do not show up under "organize my
favorites". Any ideas.

I just saw this topic, did your mum got adware on her favourites that where
is there few lists of strange link that causes pop up? Such as Casino, etc.
If so, she need to install AVG it does help to remove the adware. I had it on
my computer recently.
