I've been using winzip "evaluation version" and want to replace it with
a freeware program. What's your favorite?

I've used UltimateZip for years and have no intention to replace it :)
Last freeware version can be found at rareware section of my website
(url in sign).

Kindly regards.

In my experience, nothing is as reliable and solid as WinRAR (which is
shareware), so that's what I generally use; but 7-Zip is coming along. IZArc
has been recommended to me before, but I had some troubles with it when I
tried it. YYMV.

Tugzip. It has a very good shell integration and it extracted some zips
(....64 or so) that the latest version of Winrar choked on.

I like Alzip

FREE for home users, ALZip is the easiest to use, most powerful, and
by far the cutest compression utility available.
NEW in ALZip:

+ 4 more file formats = 35 (Added ISO, BIN, LCD, BH [2]) (v5.5)

Try ALZip and see for yourself:

* 35 archive and compression file formats
* Open CD burning file formats: ISO and BIN
* Open virtual CD files: LCD
* Password retrieval
* Create SFX (EXE) file for FREE

* Unlimited archive size with ALZ

Second that. Tugzip has been able to sort out some pretty messed up rar
archives for me. I can't decide if I like 7-Zip or Tugzip the best.

================

Now, if one or the other would include .CAB, .IMG, and .ISO capabilities
like WinRAR.

Our Gordon Darling recommended JustZIPit awhile back, from Avatarsoft.

It seems quite slick and well-behaved. The publisher's behavior is
pretty odd -- I can't find any documentation; their web site yanks over
to a freeware page before I can read it.

I haven't tried zipping anything yet. However, as far as unzipping
things like a downloaded freeware program, it goes in a flash. It's
civilized, too: it creates a subdirectory off the directory you're
unzipping from, and then dumps the unzipped files into that
subdirectory. So, it's perfectly clear -- I've certainly tried routines
that comingle the files in the same directory as the zip file, and that
directory may already contain a thousand files with names like
"jZeOii~x" and "82634283".
