I have a couple favorite programs in my XP pro running 32bit that I
really like, there not updating them to use win 7 and have a question:

The new computer runs win 7 64bit, someone said that I could run them
in a program compatibility mode.....??
Is this hard to do or even possible?

First, note that most 32-bit programs run just fine under 64-bit
Windows. The major exception is some utility programs.

But some older programs won't run under any kind of Windows 7, 32-bit
or 64-bit. If you want to run one of those, you may need to do it in
compatibility mode.

Most 32-bit programs will run just fine on 64-bit Windows, that's the
whole reason for there being a 64-bit mode for the processor. Which
program are you talking about?

One that comes to mind is 'password Corral'.

One that comes to mind is 'password Corral'.

That password manager should work fine in Win7x64, apart
from the help files not being available (that is a common
issue on older software when run under Win7.)
As Yousef said, most 32-bit bit stuff works just fine and
exceptions are usually system utilities and apps that access
hardware directly.
HTH,

HTH,

Appreciate everyone's help!!

I've been reading the endless web pages about the subject and have
drown a conclusion;
Try the app and if it doesn't work ---- then think about using
something else or install Windows XP into a virtual machine.

Not exactly. The support files for .HLP are missing,
but they can be installed.

Another program that I need to work is the e-backup ver 1.42 from
Inachis. Seem like everything I buy goes out of business :-(

I don't know what that is. A program to backup Outlook
Express? That might not be of any use on Win7 anyway. I'm
not sure if Windows Mail works the same way. But if you're
interested, you can check this out:

Starting with OE5 each user gets a GUID to name their email
folder in the Application Data\.... tree like so:

....\Application Data\Identities\{long GUID here}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\

That folder contains all the .dbx database files for the
email accounts. There's just one catch. MS creates
a new GUID if you re-install. That ID is found in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities.

The long and the short of it is that you can easily back
up OE 5/6, but you have to rename the backup folder with
the new GUID if you reinstall windows.
(Sounds confusing, but it will be self-explanatory if you look
at the OE store folder and the Registry.)

If OE8-9 AKA Windows Mail works the same way then you
should be able to back it up in the same way.
