Faulting application excel.exe

Excel (from Office 2003) is crashing for a particular user when certain
spreadsheets are opened. I can open the same files on a different machine,
and even on a blackberry, without error.
I have tried reinstalling Excel from the CD, but still get the same error.
Other office apps are working normally (although Word was crashing - and
this was fixed by reinstalling Word).
I have tried extensive searches but not found anything specific to this error.
Microsoft error reporting pointed me to Office Update, but after installing
several updates and rebooting, the problem remains.
