fatal system error

Windows will not start. I am getting the following
message:

STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBF839706, 0xF7E94668,
0x00000000)

win32k.sys - address BF839706 base at BF800000, datestamp
3f73195d

events leading up to this...

Last night the system was running slow and freezing up. I
shut down windows. I got a message that rundll32.exe was
not responding. I hit the "end task" button. Windows
shutdown, I restarted. Things still weren't right so I
have repeated these steps over and over - each time
getting the same error for rundll32.exe. Internet
explorer stopped working - though i still had broadband
connection, because aol was working. calling up the
control panel was taking about a 90 second delay.

Finally i downloaded/installed the windows XP service
pack from the microsoft site. this required that i
restart windows. i shutdown windows, and now it won't
come back. (I am on another computer writing this.)

i have tried F2 setup to startup in "safe mode" and a
long list of things scroll by until it pauses at
windows\system32\drivers\agp440.sys. then the screen
goes blue and says:

STOP: c000021a {fatal system error} the windows logon
process system process terminated unexpectedly with a
status of 0x00000080 (0x00000000 0x00000000). the system
has been shut down.

Please help me!!!!

I guess what I don't understand is why you installed the service pack
if you were getting errors that caused your machine to freeze up? Now
you've got a worse mess on your hands.

Boot your machine with your XP CD and do a repair installation. The
repair will remove the service pack and possibly fix what was wrong
with your machine. Go here for instructions on how to do a repair
install:

Very often this error indicates a hardware failure. I would start by
testing your RAM and then your hard drive. Test the RAM with something
like Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com. Let the test run for an extended
period of time(like overnight) unless errors are seen immediately. If
you get any errors, replace the RAM. Test the hard drive with a
diagnostic utility downloaded from the drive mftr.'s website. If you
are uncomfortable testing hardware, take the machine to a good local
repair shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA type of store).

Good luck,

Malke

.
I am going to try the repair/reinstall but i would like
to back up my data first.
since i can't get into windows i can't do it the "normal
way".
is there a way for me to divert to DOS so i can get to a
screen that will let me run old DOS copy commands?
Thanks.

If your hard drive was formatted using the FAT-32 file system you can
boot the machine with a Win98 EBD or Win98 boot disk and copy whatever
data you need to external media. However, if your drive was formatted
using NTFS you will be unable to "see" the drive when booted to DOS.

If your drive was formatted as NTFS, you can possibly use a copy of
Knoppix (Linux distro on CD) to boot the machine and copy or burn your
data to external media. Knoppix has an inbuilt CD burning program
that can be used. Hope this helps somewhat. Good luck. By the way,
you can do a Google search to locate a copy of Knoppix.

i have run the repair install.
i no longer have the "fatal system error" on the blue
screen.
now - i get a windows error that says:
"lsass.exe - system error. when trying to update a
password this return status indicates that the value
provided as the current password is not correct."
the above error box displays for a few seconds and the
computer shutsdown and restarts.
this happens in normal and safe mode.
any ideas what to do next?
