{Fatal System Error}

I have a friend who has gotten this error on his PC at bootup,

Stop: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status
f 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

My question is, if this is fixable by installing SP4 Win2000, how do I get
around this blue screen to perform the upgrade?
