fatal error

For about 3-4 weeks now, I have had a window come up on
my computer at start-up saying that I need to insert the
compact disc labeled Windows XP into my CD Rom to fix
some problems with files. Just today I obtained a copy of
Windows XP professional CD rom and inserted it into the
drive. I wasn't sure which option to pick when the
program came up so I chose to reinstall windows
XP...Everything was going smoothly until it came to the
preparing for installation stage. A message came up
saying that there was a fatal error that prevents Setup
from continuing. "Setup failed to install the product
catalogs" I click okay and it brings me to a list of the
errors that occurred. When I close that window, the whole
computer reboots and the setup automatically restarts and
the Fatal Error message comes up again. It's a
neverending cycle. How can I get back to my familiar
start menu? HELP PLEASE!!

Without more specifics about your system, it's impossible to give you a
definitive answer. However, it sounds like you may be experiencing
hardware failure. At the least, your operating system is probably hosed
and you'll need to do a clean reinstall of Windows. If you're not
computer savvy, I'd suggest that you take the machine to a good local
computer shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA store) and have them fix it for
you.
