Fatal Error 256 Reading boot.ini every three weeks

We have received this error about every three weeks.
We reload winxp as an overlay install and a few weeks later we get the
messge again only to have to reupdate winxp.

We are using a 3 year old Dell with an XP upgrade from WinME. It
worked fine with XP for over a year and now for a few months we have
been having this problem. We have attempted fixboot and the other
utils from recovery console in addition to full reupdating of winXP.
The full update is the only fool-proof recovery method.

Any ideas??

I would mirror the system onto a new drive. Hard drive failure after three
years of regular use is not really that surprising.
