Fast user switching

Hi,

I have lost the fast user switching. If I click 'Start' and 'Log Off'
nothing happens. If I go to 'Control Panel' - 'Users' - 'Change the way
users log on and off' and then check 'Use fast user switching' it doesn't
save that information and the next time I go in the box is un-checked again.
I've still got the welcome screen when the PC is first started. I'm using XP
Pro with service pack 2 so any ideas would be most appreciated.
