False incoming mail notification and real incoming mail undelivere

When I open Win Mail (set up with my website mail) it regularly tells me
there are (say) 4 new mails, but it has just highlighted (as unread) 4 old
mails and I have to 'mark as read'. Meanwhile real incoming mail is often not
coming through at all, like regular paypal notifications, etc..

I just opened it to find notification of 4 new incoming mails - which turned
out to be 3 old received mails highlighted. Nothing in junk mail, filters are
off.

The incoming emails which don't arrive in your Inbox, can you see
them in the webmail interface?

Which antivirus are you running? Some of them are not fully compatible
with Windows Mail.

I don't know what you mean by the webmail interface? It shows say (4) beside
inbox, but say 3 old ones are highlighted and no new ones are present.


I'm running avast and it was working fine. This has been happening only the
last couple of weeks. I did a major update download of Vista a week or so ago
but it didn't help.

The webmail interface is the portal your mail provider has set up for
accessing your email with a browser. If your mail provider has not
set up a webmail portal, you can achieve the same effect by going to
http://mail2web.com .

Your Avast antivirus was probably installed with its default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to unselect installing its troublesome email scanning module.

While Avast is uninstalled, try Windows Mail again, just to verify that
the culprit has been found.
