fake cd drive

I was wondering if anyone knows the fake CD drive. On of
my mates made a fake CD drive and put the image of a cd
in the folder. now it beleives that its a cd drive giving
all options a physical drive would. He got a new hard
drive and when he ghosted all his data over it no longer
was there? does any one know how to do this?

The best way I know of is to use Alcohol 120% to mount a CD Image.
