Failover Virtual IP address

Chris Van Krieken

Hello,

Suppose 2 machines, 1 hot, 1 cold standbye. We want to use 1 virtual IP
address that is used by the active server. When switching to the other
server, he should take over that virtual IP address. Anyone know is this is
possible with Windows 2000 Adv. Server or what software can do this ?

Thanks,

Chris.

Thanks for the answer, but I don't want to cluster.
The disks should not be shared, only the IP address...

Hello Chris,

Yes, this is possible with the Windows 2000 Clustering Technology.
You don't need to purchase any additional software.

The two links below will give you some introduction information.

Thanks again, but that is not what I mean.

The idea is to have 2 servers, one "hot" and one "cold". There should be one
virtual IP address, the one that the hot server used when online. When
switching the hot one down and powering up the cold server, the cold server
becomes hot and get's the virtual IP address.

Any ideas. With other software packages maybe ?

Thanks,

Chris.

If the cold server is really 'cold', i.e. off-line, then why don't you use
the same static IP and host name for both hot and cold? I wonder what this
setup can be useful for: cold server cannot be a replica, can it?
