Failed XP Home Upgrade

Dan Kosek

A defective XP Home Upgrade CD has left my old Win98
system in between systems. BTW BestBuy replaced the CD
without any hassles??? I was impressed.

On boot, it gives me the choice to complete my XP
installation which fails with:

STOP 0x000000ED
(0x8129A7C8,0xC000014F,0x00000000,0x00000000)
Unmountable_Boot_Volume

On trying to reinstall the Xp Home Upgrade I get a
different failure:

windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I thought I would ask if anyone out there knew how to
clean this mess up. I go to the remove/add programs and
XP doesn't show up there. How do I clean XP off this
system and start again?

System Specifics, If they are helpful.
Celeron 433Mhz on Epox EP-BX3, 192Mb ram
ATI 7000 AGP video card w/32Mb
80GB Western Digital HD
CD-ROM (IDE)
New DVD R/RW (IDE)
Modem 56Kb PCI
Creative Soundblaster 16
Logitec Optical Mouse
10/100 Ethernet Card - DLINK

Your Help is greatly appreciated.

I got the hal.dll error during my upgrade.

I resolved it by using the repair option when running
setup again.

hope this helps,

Hi Ernie,

Thanks but when I try to upgrade I don't have a "repair"
option. Only "Upgrade" and "New Install" (wipes
harddrive). If I boot to Win98 it still shows a 4.10.1998
version of Win98 (DOS prompt - type "ver"). I wish I knew
what to do?

Thanks, but I think I'm going to have to do the "New
install" and rebuild all my installed apps and data.

If it works!
