Failed to load Java applet

Hi,
Have just boutght a new computer with Win XP installed, to allow java to run
I have installed Sun JRE 2, but get the message when I try to exe a program
using Java: Failed to load Java Applet. Once again don't know what to look
for to change maybe a setting I need to alter or enable. Advice will be
greatly appreciated thankyou
