Failed ME upgrade to XP Pro

Guest

The XP installation program aborts with error message 596FFCh while trying to
install XP Pro (with SP2) over ME. Machine should be capable of handling XP
(32 bit P3 processor , 256 RAM, and a 30 GB HDD).

Where can I find a discussion of this error message?
Has anyone else run into this problem & solved it?

Are you trying to perform an upgrade or a clean install. The size of your
hard drive doesn't matter as much as how much FREE space you still have on
it. An upgrade install needs a lot more free space that a clean install of
Windows XP.

Did you run the Upgrade Advisor found on the WinXP CD before actually doing
the upgrade - this will answer the question "Machine should be capable of
handling XP", also the P3 process, what speed? I believe it must be at
least a 233MHz (166 or 200 won't get it). Also, as Richard stated, you need
about 10GB or so free on the "system" partition, if you are upgrading with
the option to restore back to your old OS if you don't want to keep the XP
installation. Lastly, what file format is the "system", I don't believe XP
will support a FAT16 partition to become the system/boot drive as the max
partition size at 64kb clusters is 4GB, way to small for normal operation of
XP, although it may be able to install.
