Upgrade XP home to XP pro fails.

I have a new Compaq V5119US laptop with an AMD Turion64 processor. It came
with XP home but I would like to upgrade to XP pro.

I have the XP SP1 media and the SP2 cdrom so I did an integration as
outlined in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894947/ to C:\XPCD then I ran
setup from there.

Setup runs until it tries to save the configuration and gets this error:

Setup can not set the required Windows XP configuration information. This
indicates an internal setup error. Contact your system administrator.

This article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316425/en-us says the BIOS
needs to be updated but I have already done that.

I can do a clean install of XP Pro but I wanted to keep the laptop utilities
and preinstalled applications.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Edwin

First - what TYPE of Windows XP Pro media is it you are trying to use?
Where did you get it, etc?

If it is an OEM copy - it cannot perform upgrade installs - only CLEAN (lose
everything that was there before) installs.

I am using the XP Pro full install media from my Action Pack Subscription. I
had to do the above integration because my XP CD is SP1 and the XP home that
is preinstalled on the laptop is SP2. I am installing from C:\XPCD after I do
the SP2 integration. I have also tried it by copying the files to a CDR with
the same results. It almost seems as if there is something Compaq installed
which is hosing the install or else the installer doesn't like the Turion 64.

Thanks

Thier is no upgrade from home to xp pro,the "upgrade" is for older
windows OS.To install pro from home, one must boot to xp pro cd,select
install xp,new copy,delete the partition(home),create one,then pro installs
auto.

Andrew,

When you get one wrong (like this one) the first time - and it is proven to
you that it was the incorrect assumption - repeating it over and over does
not make it true.

Examples of your incorrect statement - over and over:

The same answer I continue to give to prove to you that your assumption is
completely and totally false:

Andrew E. has been incorrect about this many times - but refuses (or perhaps
cannot comprehend) the fact that upgrading from Windows XP Home to Windows
Professional is supported and one of the easiest paths to follow.

Windows XP supported upgrade paths
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292607

That article clearly shows a path from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP
Professional Edition..

Even external (non-Microsoft sponsored) confirm this:

What are the supported upgrade paths to Windows XP?

it all" people down.

Edwin,

It is definitely possible. I have the exact same laptop and after looking
at these responses and at HP's website was able to get it to work. There
seems to be a little quirk in running the upgrade. Create the Pro SP2
slip-stream disk and then boot on your home edition installed on the laptop.
Insert the XP Pro disk you created. The welcome screen should come up. The
first option will be to install XP. It will start the install and suggest to
UPGRADE. This all works until the process reboots the system. When that
happens remove the disk. If you get a menu as to what you want to boot
select the XP home option. You should find the Windows setup running and it
will ask for the disk to be installed. This should complete as expected. If
you have not installed some of the apps on the system you may have to
individually recover them off the recovery partition. HP's site has
documentation on this.

Hope this was not too long and that it helps.
