Failed Driver Update Download

Have tried about 6 times to download a modem driver from
Microsoft XP, but each time it fails and am told to retry.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this a glicht from
Microsoft?

Does your modem work correctly? I assume so since you can get on line to
try and download the driver. If the modem is working, then leave the
drivers alone. It's not a good idea to use drivers from Microsoft's
Windows Update anyway. And with drivers, unless newer ones will give
you features you have to have (most often found with drivers for video
cards), the best policy is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
