Security Update for IE7 WinXP KB950759 fails to install

J

"Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB950759)" installation fails on XP Pro SP3. Automatic Updates was the first try, after that failed I downloaded the file from Microsoft Downloads. That too failed, so I tried the Microsoft Update Site. Same thing - fails. It seems to do a precondition check and something tells it to stop installing. Not anti-malware software, system fully updated and working perfectly. Any ideas or sympathy?

0x8007F0F1 is the key error but you've gotta answer some more questions
before we can make sense of it here.

Repost:
Was IE7 installed before or after WinXP SP3 was installed?

Did you install Win XP SP3 via Windows Update or manually? Had you
reinstalled WinXP (SP2) just before you installed SP3?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these applications running when you installed SP3?

Were any other updates offered besides KB950759? If so, did they install
successfully?

---> I, too, am having this problem. The last error in the log is
0x80070005; however, the WU website shows 0x8DDD0007.

---> From the end of the log:

Install Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update
with error 0x80070005: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for
Windows XP (KB950759).
***

Virus protection was turned off during install; I use a hardware firewall.

---> What I've tried:
1 -- I tried using the AU Reset tool from Sheenan Stanley
(http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...date&mid=38beac09-b7f4-45ee-9c47-5c28fd2b974e).
After running his tool, I went back to the WU website & went through the DL
& installation of 950759 again. It asked me to reboot, which I did. After
reboot, the yellow shield is still in the systray

2 -- Tried following the troubleshooting steps offered on the WU website.

3 -- I have tried calling the PCSAFETY number for different WU issues in the
past (different computer), and the person's thick accent coupled w/ the
excessive background noise made it impossible to understand the tech.

---> I think this is the part of the log where it begins the 950759 update...

I encountered the same problem but fortunately I found a solution offered in
another thread. Simply reinstall IE7 from the MS download center and then
the update will install cleanly. I ran the latest version of Belarc Advisor
and it shows all required security updates have been applied. I did disable
my AVG 8.0 Free Edition
Resident Shield while updating.

In case anyone is wondering I do have the Google toolbar beta (not Google
Earth) installed,
Version: 5.0.1112.7760-big/en (GGLL)
Notifier Version: 3.0.914.9778 .

This problem is the same one as I have just experienced. I have XP Pro with
SP3 on a desktop and a notebook. The OS was installed on both of them from a
slipstreamed XP/SP3 CD. They both have AVG 8 Free version installed. No
others. XP Firewall.
The notebook installed the same update plus five more in the same batch
without any problems on the 11th June. I didn't make any changes to AVG.
They both had IE7 installed a few days ago, that is, later than the OS.

The desktop also downloaded (from Update) the same six updates on the same
day and started to install them. But, after the message "Initializing
Installation" appeared, nothing else happened, except for the HDD buzzing
away!

I left it running for about five hours while doing other things, and then
shut down the computer. It duly came up with the shutting down message, and
then the message "updates being installed 1....6...." or similar. Then I gave
it some more time and as the message remained unchanged, I switched off.

So why the diference?

From KB950759-IE7.log:

Uninstall WinXP SP3 Beta/Release Candidate via Add/Remove Programs, then

(Redone with missing answers)

Hello, here are the answers.

? Was IE7 installed before or after WinXP SP3 was installed?
Long before.

? Did you install Win XP SP3 via Windows Update or manually?
Manually.

? Had you reinstalled WinXP (SP2) just before you installed SP3?
No.

? What anti-virus application or security suite is installed?
Just ZoneAlarm Suite, which I shutdown.

? Were any other updates offered besides KB950759?
Yes.

? If so, did they install successfully?
Yes.

Some things I've since found:

From KB950759-IE7.log:
"AnalyzeForBranching: files installed on target workstation are from
sp3bta
branch which is incompatible with sp2gdr branch"

From website:
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-031 - Critical
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (950759)
Published: June 10, 2008 Updated: June 11, 2008
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-031.mspx

Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows XP Service Pack 3
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=FBC31BDE-0BF5-490C-96A8-071310D9464A

I'm confused. It says for SP3, but the installer fails because of SP3. So
if files are incompatible why is the update offered?

Repost:

Did you install Win XP SP3 via Windows Update or manually? Had you
reinstalled WinXP (SP2) just before you installed SP3?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party
firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running when you
installed SP3?

Were any other updates offered besides KB950759? If so, did they
install
successfully?

May I stick my nose in?

'Beginning a new thread' means to start your own thread. It does /not/
mean changing the Subject line.

It is considered rude to appropriate someone else's thread. That's known
as 'hijacking' and it's rude because the OP (original poster) deserves
our full attention, including an answer specifically tailored to their
question.

Since every computer configuration and user situation is different, your
question is not necessarily the same as the OP's situation (although it
may seem the same to you.)

Since hijackers don't usually get this kind of consideration, you would
do well to accept my advice and start your own thread.

Other ways you can avoid arousing the ire of your fellow users (nobody
here works for Microsoft):

1- Review previous posts to see if your question has already been
addressed before you ask the same question.

2- Learn how to ask a question wisely

advice I took time to give.

Tony did begin a new thread with the subject "Updates install hangs."
However, he didn't crosspost it to WinXP General or IE General.

"How to ask a question"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555375

3- Try searching the web before posting a question. That's where most of
the answers we offer come from.

Subject - Updates install hangs

:

Please begin a new thread about your issues, Tony. Thanks.

This problem is the same one as I have just experienced. I have XP Pro
with
SP3 on a desktop and a notebook. The OS was installed on both of them
from a
slipstreamed XP/SP3 CD. They both have AVG 8 Free version
installed. No
others. XP Firewall.
The notebook installed the same update plus five more in the same
batch
without any problems on the 11th June. I didn't make any changes to
AVG.
They both had IE7 installed a few days ago, that is, later than the
OS.

The desktop also downloaded (from Update) the same six updates on the
same day and started to install them. But, after the message
"Initializing Installation" appeared, nothing else happened, except
for
the HDD buzzing away!

I left it running for about five hours while doing other things,
and then
shut down the computer. It duly came up with the shutting down
message,
and
then the message "updates being installed 1....6...." or similar.
Then I
gave it some more time and as the message remained unchanged, I
switched
off.

So why the diference?

[X-post to Windows Update newsgroup]

Was IE7 installed before or after WinXP SP3 was installed?

Uninstall SP3 Beta? What beta? I've never touched SP3 Beta.

Are you absolutely certain? The update installer thinks you've got SP3 beta -
or at least, one or more files from SP3 beta.

Did you download the executable file or the ISO image? What is the name of the
file downloaded?

I'd suggest uninstalling SP3 (whether it's Beta or not) and then IE7. Reinstall
SP3 (if you're sure it isn't the beta!) and then IE7 (make sure you've got the
latest installer) and with luck you'll be able to install the update.

From KB950759-IE7.log:
"AnalyzeForBranching: files installed on target workstation are from sp3bta branch which is incompatible with sp2gdr branch"

"spebta branch" is the correct branch for SP3 even with having SP3 final
version installed and sp2gdr is the branch for IE7 update files even for SP3.
Confusing? Yes, for sure.

Now the question remains, which files are found to be from the "wrong"
branch and preventing the installation of KB950759 on your system.

Did you install any "Hotfix" or the like in the meantime, i.e. KB951978?

Which is the file version of the following files on your system?

mshtml.dll
iexplore.exe
ieframe.dll
inetcpl.cpl
urlmon.dll
wininet.dll
ieframe.dll.mui
extmgr.dll
ieapfltr.dat
ieakui.dll
mstime.dll
dxtrans.dll
dxtmsft.dll
advpack.dll
iedkcs32.dll
ieapfltr.dll
ie4uinit.exe
ieudinit.exe
icardie.dll
mshtmled.dll
webcheck.dll
ieakeng.dll
ieaksie.dll
iertutil.dll
msfeedsbs.dll
url.dll
occache.dll
msfeeds.dll
pngfilt.dll
iernonce.dll
msrating.dll
jsproxy.dll

Although you've stated to have ZoneAlarm disabled while installing, I would
recommend to *uninstall* ZoneAlarm and enable Windows Firewall instead - at
least for testing if the installation of KB950759 for IE7 will run without
ZoneAlarm beeing installed.

Bye,
Freudi

Err ..., isn't it supposed to be
"microsoft.public.multimedia.windows.mediaplayer" ?

Err, .... no.

Actually it's supposed to be

microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player

The group you mentioned gets only about 100 posts a month. This one
gets 300.
