Update:

1. Uninstalled SP3.
2. Reset Automatic Updates with Dial-a-Fix.
3. Restarted.

4. Automatic Updater notifies of available updates.
5. All updates install except for the last one, which failed,
"Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer 7".
6. Restarted.

7. Installation attempt of IE7 from downloaded setup file.
8. For some unknown reason I received this message,
"Internet Explorer 7 installation was successful."
9. Well all right!

10. Installation of KB950759 from downloaded setup file.
11. Another odd message, "KB950759 installation was successful."
12. Well all right!

13. Hopped on down to the Microsoft Update website to
get SP3. Sadly it is not offered.
14. Manual download and install of SP3.
15. Yet another strange message, "Service Pack 3 installation
was successful."
16. Well all right!

Everything looked good, but no. I am being stalked by the glitch monster!

Now 'Add or Remove Programs' crashes when I set 'Program Access and
Defaults'.
And now Windows Media Player fails to start. Nothing happens when clicking
its shortcut or its executable. I wonder what else is #ucked.

I think I can close this thread now, but I will start a new one for WMP.

Thanks.

Thank you for your help so far, PA Bear.

Uninstall SP3 Beta? What beta? I've never touched SP3 Beta. I installed
the final official release from Microsoft Downloads.

--------------------------------------------------------

I tried downloading and installing IE7 again, and now this is becoming a
true nightmare from hell. (Everything worked absolutely perfectly before
this update.)

Event Viewer errors after IE7 installation attempt:

Event Source: Internet Explorer 7 Disk
Event ID: 4379
Description: Internet Explorer 7 Hotfix ie7 installation failed. Internet
Explorer 7 installation did not complete.

Event Source: Internet Explorer 7 Disk
Event ID: 4373
Description: Internet Explorer 7 ie7 installation failed. Access is
denied.

I can't find the IE log file now, but it said it could not read the
Registry.

So I reset permissions using Dial-a-Fix. That had no effect.

--------------------------------------------------------

Now I can't update KB950759 and IE7 installation fails and my SP3 Final
isn't final?

Hello, here are the answers.

? Was IE7 installed before or after WinXP SP3 was installed?
Long before.

? Did you install Win XP SP3 via Windows Update or manually?
Manually.

? Had you reinstalled WinXP (SP2) just before you installed SP3?
No.

? What anti-virus application or security suite is installed?
Just ZoneAlarm Suite, which I shutdown.

? Were any other updates offered besides KB950759?
Yes.

? If so, did they install successfully?
Yes.

Some things I've since found:

From KB950759-IE7.log:

I'm confused. It says for SP3, but the installer fails because of SP3.
So
if files are incompatible why is the update offered?

listed items are all of the new updates. Any suggestions will be

I have had all the above problems as you had. I downloaded as fresh Internet
Explorer version 7 to my desktop, exited anivirus, firewall program and
Windows Defender. I then just ran the downloaded copy from my desktop, (no
need to uninstall anything) when
installed I rebooted, I then ran the KB950759 and it installed beautifully. I
might add it was the same version of Internet Explorer that I already had.
Don't ask me why it worked. LOL I was just happy it did.
Hope it helps everyone that is having trouble with this one.
Cheers,

I just bought an HP laptop from my cousin and I been redoing everything. My
system is immaculate until I tried to install (KB950759). I got anti-virus
and
firewall protection that I am confortable with. The problem is not in that
area. There
is a glitch in service pack 3 that prevents future updates from installing.
I wasn't able to install musicmatch AT ALL! So I had to REFORMAT the hard
drive
in order to get it on the computer. And so I quickly got the updates for it
before something
else went wrong. BUT HERE IS THE ANSWER: I found that uninstalling service
pack 3 from "add and remove" programs and reinstalling from windows update
can give you
another shot at it! It can correct the problem. In my case it did and it
is really the only solution that I, with my years of experience have come up
with. We all know that when we have a computer we will be frustrated. We've
all gone through it so just remember you are not alone.

Virus protection was turned off during install; I use a hardware firewall.

1 -- I tried using the AU Reset tool from Sheenan Stanley
(http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...date&mid=38beac09-b7f4-45ee-9c47-5c28fd2b974e).
After running his tool, I went back to the WU website & went through the DL
& installation of 950759 again. It asked me to reboot, which I did. After
reboot, the yellow shield is still in the systray

2 -- Tried following the troubleshooting steps offered on the WU website.

3 -- I have tried calling the PCSAFETY number for different WU issues in the
past (different computer), and the person's thick accent coupled w/ the
excessive background noise made it impossible to understand the tech.

I just bought an HP laptop from my cousin and I been redoing everything.
My
system is immaculate until I tried to install (KB950759). I got
anti-virus
and
firewall protection that I am confortable with. The problem is not in
that
area. There
is a glitch in service pack 3 that prevents future updates from
installing.
I wasn't able to install musicmatch AT ALL! So I had to REFORMAT the
hard
drive
in order to get it on the computer. And so I quickly got the updates for
it
before something
else went wrong. BUT HERE IS THE ANSWER: I found that uninstalling
service
pack 3 from "add and remove" programs and reinstalling from windows update
can give you
another shot at it! It can correct the problem. In my case it did and it
is really the only solution that I, with my years of experience have come
up
with. We all know that when we have a computer we will be frustrated.
We've
all gone through it so just remember you are not alone.

So you are saying there are no glitches in service pack 3? I think with your
1 link
you resolved the issue. I didn't know about the file that stood on its own.
WOW! Thanks for the input. As a user I do have a suggestion. Would it
be too much to ask to let the user know in advance before he clicks about
this issue so that they are not stumbling around in the dark believing that
their computer is to blame? I mean hours, even days can be wasted on
something that you'd think was not too elementary for the makers of this

So you are saying there are no glitches in service pack 3?

Did I say that? No, I was merely commenting on your claim that a glitch in
SP3 that prevents the installation of future updates.

If KB943144 was your fix, I must assume that you encountered the issue
because you'd done a Repair Install, a Recovery install, or a clean install
of WinXP (or upgraded to WinXP) just before you installed SP3.

No one here works for or represents Microsoft, including MS MVPs, but I hear
you. My sources tell me that this issue will be fixed later this year with
the release of new versions of Windows Update Agent and Microsoft Update
Agent, both currently in beta (one hears).

Meanwhile, you're welcome & thanks for your feedback.

PS: There are *tons* of posts in the newsgroups about this problem. In 99%
of them, KB943144 was posted as the fix. A little Google searching before
you'd posted here would have led you to them:

Hi,

I have the same problem as ju.c, only I cannot use the proposed solution.

My situation is as follows: I am preparing an unattended Windows
installation, based on the student edition downloaded from MSDNAA
(en_winxp_pro_with_sp2.iso). I slipstreamed SP3 (I used the network
install version [1], as recommended by msfn [2]) together with all
updates that can be slipstreamed [3]. Furthermore, I integrated several
other updates via SVCPACK.INF [4], including IE7.

After installation of this windows setup, I experienced the same error
as ju.c, but you can see that it is not an option for me to uninstall
SP3. I was wondering, could I slipstream the Express Install into my
windows source (i.e., does it also support the /s:<path> switch) and
would that solve my problem? And in case that wouldn't solve the
problem, what else could I change in the setup of my windows
installation so that update 950759 will work.

TIA,
Jelle Fresen

OK so far.
Furthermore, I integrated several

To the best of my knowledge, this isn't a supported procedure. I recommend you
drop IE7 and other non-slipstreamable updates from the Windows image. There are
various ways to post-install them automatically; contact me directly if you need
suggetsions.

(Incidentally, it would have been preferable if you had started a new thread to
describe your issue rather than following up to someone else's. Otherwise it
tends to cause confusion.)

For the record, the svcpack.inf procedure *is* in fact supported, but only for
some older updates - specifically, updates using update.exe versions earlier
than 5.4.15.0. (This seems unlikely to include any updates applicable to SP3,
but YMMV; however, it certainly doesn't include IE7.)

The IE7 updater is based on update.exe, but doesn't support the /integrate
switch; I can only presume that there is a good reason for this and that
bypassing the restriction via svcpack.inf is likely to result in a broken
installation.

I dasabled the antivirus and the wondows fire wall but KB950759 still will
not install. WHat else can I do to get this to install properly????

J

ju.c

I'm ju.c, original poster.

I've had some time to think about the KB950759 install problem and I have an idea, but my
problem is fixed, so I don't have a test system.
Because the setup does a pre-condition check it makes sense to fool the installer.
Extract the files from KB950759 then search for the same files on your computer. I wonder
if deleting the copies that have the same file names as KB950759 that are in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\ and anywhere else, except \system32\ or \Program
Files\Internet Explorer\ will be the trick.

My fix was uninstalling SP3. That replaced IE7 files, thus the KB950759 installed OK.

I'd love to know what the problem was, and if this works, I'll know.

Good luck!

I uninstalled SP3, then re-installed it, then the update installed OK.

This is what I did:

1. Uninstall SP3.
2. Restart.
3. Run chkdsk.
Yes: Automatically fix file system errors.
No: Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
4. Install SP3.
5. Restart.
6. Restart again.
7. Install KB950759.

Good luck!
