I just loaded XP prof. package. The loading went ok, but
I'm having a problem with the modem. I have a stand alone
system, no networks with a usrobotics 36.6 ext. modem on
com1. I loaded this over an ME operating system., and I
didn't change any hardware.
When I try to connect to the internet I get the #692
error, however I also tried the hyperterminal and the
phone dialer and the modem works fine.
I'm sure this is a simple setting somewhere in the system
that is set wrong but I have no idea where to find it.

Hi, Ron.

WinXP is built on the NT platform, which deals with hardware much
differently than the MS-DOS platform, on which Win9x/ME and prior versions
were built. There is almost NO chance that any device drivers that worked
with WinME will also work with WinXP. When upgrading from WinME, WinXP
Setup attempts to migrate device drivers to the WinXP versions, but is not
always successful, especially for hardware that is very new, very old, or
too far out of the mainstream - which that 36.6 external modem may be. (My
3Com internal PCI ADSL modem has been orphaned by 3Com and WinXP drivers for
it are impossible to find.)

Fortunately, that modem was pretty common - almost a standard - and WinXP
drivers should be pretty easy to find. A Google search for "usr modem
driver" brought up this page as the first of over 100,000 hits:
http://www.usr.com/support/s-main-menu.asp

I can't go further because I don't know your exact model number, but you do,
so you can. ;<)
