External HDD Not Showing in My Computer

I have just bought my second external Plug & Play HDD. On plugging it
in, the normal found new hardware --> hardware is installed and ready to
use process occurred but a shortcut for the drive isn't displaying in My
Computer. The Device Manager shows it is installed as a USB Mass Storage
device under Universal Serial Bus Controllers. My other external HD
fires up straight away and opens displaying the main folder. Not having
a shortcut means I cannot access the drive. Can anyone help me with
this?

I have 2 x USB 2.0 ports
Dell Inspiron 8500 running Win XP SP2

And when its plugged in what does Disk Management show?
Perhaps the drive need to be prepared?

You're correct! I was not formatted. Formatting gave me a drive letter
and now I am up and running. Thanks for your help.
