Hi, i have a freecom 80GB external hard drive that has worked no problem
until today.Basically i plug it into pc ( chimes go ) HD starts to fire up
but then stops then it tries to load again but fails and thats all it seems
to do ive tried different cables, ive tried it on a different pc but no joy.
tried device manager on both pc's it sees the drive but the name of the
device is not what its meant to be also when the drive is connected to either
pc, the pc becomes very slow ( take usb cable out pc's return to norm speed )
is there any way of getting to the stuff on drive??? or has the drive gone to
the big volume in the sky?? hope sme1 can help
martin.

You are describing hard drive failure. Often, shorlty before "the click
of death" sound, there are times where the hard drive is trying to
locate the very first data location (in lay terms). If it can't
determine the track where data starts, it can't count cylinders.

How old is the hard drive?
How long is the hard drive warranty?

Do you have USB-1 or USB-2 (Hi-Speed)?

hardly been used really sods law not long since outside warrenty !! i'm using
USB-2 i had a feeling it was the drive because of the clicking noise but
needed to make sure. I guess its hard to get stuff of it now?
