External Hard Drive Not Recognised

Hi,

I recently purchased a 20Gb external hard drive to connect
to my Sony laptop via i.Link or FireWire (through a
cardbus). However, my laptop does not seem to recognise
the device as an additional drive. Rather it recognises
it as a Disk Drive i.e. I can identify the external drive
in Device Manager under Disk Drives. Device Manager also
indicates that it is correctly installed (i.e. working
properly) but when I go to My Computer I cannot see the
device as a drive. If I right click on the a: drive (i.e.
disk drive) and then look in properties/hardware I can see
that the external drive is there.

I am running Windows 2K. The external drive manufacturer
Eastmode Pte Ltd says that the external drive does not
require new drivers for 2K.

I guess there is some form of device conflict? Please
help or else I will need to sell my new device on eBay!

Cheers,

You should partition the new HDD, format, and assign a drive letter(s). All
these tasks are performed in Disk Management snap-in (diskmgmt.msc).

Hi,

Thanks for the advice but I had a look under Disk Mgmt and
the external hard drive could not be found. Does this
mean I have a driver problem? If so what driver am I
looking for - the manufacturer suggests that the external
harddrive doesnt need specific drivers i.e. they should be
covered by MS Windows 2000? Any ideas?

Cheers,

James

I'm sorry, but is the right lower pane of Disk Management large enough to
fit all the disks or has the scrollbar?
