extensions

thanks guys. alas, i'm so new that MSN9, 3rd party, and
wildcard are terms that don't mean anything to me yet.
except I've seen wildcard on my Adblock windows. (BUT! i
do know what filename extensions are & I unblocked them
cause im reading XP for dummies.)
And what my question really was was where to find
"downloads", if extensions means filename extensions. But
i've also heard things like bandwidth tester called extensions.
BUT! I FOUND THEM!(at least the one I wanted)-in
TOOLS. Yes! But I still have a question.
I still would like to know how to bring up that window
in the top left corner that lists downloads. It seems to
list them in different kinds, so I think that's by type of
extension.
If you guys want to take the time to explain the other
terms you used, I would be very grateful. However, life is
short, and I totally understand that you're on this site to
be helpful, not to teach from the ground up. Im getting a
lot from my xp 9in1 book, which im reading from cover to
cover (slowly) but in the meantime, I often don't know the
right term to be able to find an ans. in Woody's index.
however, I am proof that a 60 yr. old grandma can
learn the computer! ive only been doing it for 2 months,
and I downloaded the bandwidth tester ext., bec. I wanted
to shock my 4 kids on the family talk site who were asking
ea. other strength questions, by replying to the question
too. only then I couldn't find it to use it. so Yay for
TOOLS, bec. I did run the test and my report did totally
blow my kids away this morning. Very Important for mom to
be able to still do that...

I'm not sure what window you're talking about. On most XP systems, when you
click a link to download a file, a window appears prompting if you want to
Save or Open the file. If you select Save, another window appears - the
save file dialog. It has remembered the last location that a downloaded
file was saved to and will display that location. That location can be left
as is or it can be changed.

In other words, the file will be saved exactly where *you* tell Windows to
save it. You might want to create a folder in My Documents called
"Downloads" and select that for your downloaded files. Two pluses to this:

1) Do this once and it will become the remembered location in the save
dialog box.
2) You'll never have to search for downloads again. They will be in your My
Documents\Downloads folder.

It's good that you have a book. May want to spend some extra time on the
"file management" topics since that's what most of your current questions
are about.

Extensions when speaking of file names is a designator that can indicate
what type of data a file contains. *.TXT files are usually TEXT files.
*.BMP files are bitmaps - images that can be viewed with image programs
such as Paint. This should be covered in more depth in the book you have as
well.

Download managers are available as third party programs or within MSN9
(MicroSoft Network) and other services. MSN9 is Microsoft's subscription
internet service. I use it and I use its download manager's page. XP
itself does not give you a download manager of that kind. Instead, each
item you download is managed by a download tool that gives you the
opportunity to Save the download to your computer (I usually tell it to save
to the desktop so I can find it easily) or Run the download program's
installer as soon as the download is completed. For information about MSN9
