Ext Firewire DVDBurner disappears from My Computer 15 sec after system start

My system recognizes the external firewire DVD Burner upon
inital boot, but a few seconds after Windows 2000 Pro has
initialized, the external drive Icon disappears from My
Computer. I receive an error message "g:/ is not
accessible. The request could not be performed because of
an I/O device error. This is a second DVD drive. The
other DVD ROM is internal. Should the jumpers on the
external drive be set to something other than Master?

The new drive is a Pioneer DVR-106 and the computer is a
Dell Precision 450.

Welcome to Dell Hell. Dell systems offer really piss poor support for
Firewire devices. Dell support may or may not be of help, but that's about
your only choice. Keep this in mind when you purchase your next computer.
