ext. firewire HD not recognized/Code 10

I got an external USB2.0/Firewire Hardrive for my win2000 (sp4)
system. I was able to do a system backup to the external HD once (this
was difficult since the connection was finicky), but now the external
HD does not show up as the "E:" drive as it used to. (It's connected
by the Firewire cable.)

I checked "Hardware", and got a "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
I checked all connections. It's fine. I put my mouse over the green
ribbon on the bottom right. I got a "WDC Fire/USB 2.0 IEEE 1394 SBP2
Device" message. I checked the driver. It says the driver is dated
"11/14/99 , 5.0.2183.1" and points to
C:\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\disk.sys. Is this driver the problem? If so,
where on the microsoft site do I find a new driver (I looked at the
microsoft Win2000 support site and found nothing about WD USB/Firewire
ext. HD).

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Many thanks in advance!
