Firewire card, W2k and me: who doesn't run ? ? ?

Hi !
First of all, sorry for my poor english....
I installed a combo-card with USB 2.0 and Firewire ports on my PC, but I
can't see any by Firewire.
Card is a Mercury by Manhattan (but User Guide write Sunix mod. UFC 3212V)
with 4 USB 2.0 and 2 Firewire 400 (IEEE 1394-1995, P1394a rev. 1.1 and OHCI
specifiche 1.0). His chipset is VIA and any driver was necessary to install
the card on my operative system (Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack
4. My motherboard is an ASUS mod. CUV4X-E, with VIA VT82C686B chipset).
The problem is: when I plug my external HD (Maxtor One Touch II), W2k
doesn't see it; is not plug & play ?
I verify on -system- e there aren't problems with the card, all is ok.
Second question: can I use the Firewire ports to connect my PC with a
notebook (Toshiba) ? Are there any problems ? Is the identification like
"plug & play" as when we use the network port ? If so is, then W2k doesn't
see notebook too.......
I hope was able to explain my problems.
Thanks.

Daniele
