Exporting Contacts Uploads to Server - Outlook Connector

I've noticed when exporting from Outlook 2007 (have Outlook Connector
account) to a .pst file (either for backup of to create a subset of contacts
for mailings) that Outlook uploads "changes" to the msn server. I don't
understand this functionality as I'm not making changes and if doing a backup
to a pst it can take a long time and have also had duplication issues when
this occurs. Why is this occurring and can it be eliminated?

Thanks,

J Austin

Why not use Categories instead of creating a new "subset" of contacts
for mailings?

Gordon,
Thanks for responding. That is what I've tried to do but "categories" are
not brought across when doing a mail merge. At least I haven't found how to
do it.

Thanks,

John

And you dont generally export to create backups, with outlook closed you
copy the pst file, or you make use of the free MS Outlook backup addin

How do you mean "not brought across"?
Select the Category and do Tools-Mailmerge and check the radio button
"Only selected Contacts"

DL,
Thanks for responding. I am on Outlook Connector so there is no .pst file,
just an .ost file. In the past I didn't get a clean backup by just copying
the .ost file so it appeared I would get a good set of backups by exporting
my .ost file to a .pst file. It could then be imported, if requred (.pst
into an open .ost). I am always reluctant to have only the msn server as my
source of backup. I accidentally deleted my contacts, and of course, they
went away everywhere. But, as I said, everytime I do an export from my .ost
it uploads everything to the msn server as changes. Not sure why this would
intended behaviour.
