Explorer takes *ages* to list files...

Whenever I click on a folder with loads of files in it (252 - mostly
apps [.exe or .zip] I have downloaded so I can install again whenever I
need them), explorer takes absolutely ages to list the files. And some
times explorer closes and reopens and then I lose all my icons in the
Systray.
If I go Start | My Documents and click on the folder it lists it
quickly.
I have 768MB ram and a 2400+ AMD chip.
Ideas as to why this does this?

it's quite possibly the built in .zip file handling, which treats them
as folders and unzips them to look inside. I'd personally get Winzip (or
similar) instead, and then turn off the winxp zip handler with

start, run, regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll (repeat without the /u to turn it on
again)

With zip files (or some multimedia ones - avi can give trouble)
Explorer looks in the file to get out detail of content for use in
Properties, or (in the case of zip) for display as a folder. ANd zip
files are also searched whenever you search for files. If you have e a
third party zip program like WinZip it may well pay to turn this off:
Start - Run the line
regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll
Same without the /u to turn it back on
