When I'm in a folder and left clicking should open a
folder I'm getting a Search Results box instead. I can
still open the folder by right clicking and following the
menu commands but instead of OPEN being on the top line
it has been replaced by SEARCH in black bold print as a
default selection. Any way to edit this back to it's
original configuration?

There is a solution to this issue
on www.dougknox.com , click on windows xp fixes->Search/Command Prompt Opens
When Double Clicking a Folder

Run this vbs file and it should fix it.

Or, Click Start, Run, type "REGSVR32 /i SHELL32"
