Explorer opening files from

My system slows down and I get "Not Responding" messages when opening files
by double clicking from Explorer.
Under Win98 they opened immediately.
Have I configured something wrong?

What sort of files (and what else is in the directory that these files
are in)? XP Explorer chokes rather badly on some sorts of media files
(.avi files in particular), and by default opens and examines the
insides of any .zip files it trips over (makes believe they are
folders).

Also, are you running a 'real time' virus scanner - this normally
springs into action and scans a file when it is opened, which can take a
while with some virus scanners .. if you have one such, try turning off
'real time scanning' and see if the problem then goes away.
