explorer ntdll.dll faulty

My explorer keeps acting weird- get a message that it has failed and that an error report wants to be sent, all the icons and the taskbar blink then come back on. I checked the log and it shows an error with ntdll.dll being faulty. How do I get a new one of these .dll's and install it?
2nd problem-- my computer will not let me check my hard drive for erros and fix them. It tries to do it on a re-boot but a message appears on the the 3rd line on the blue screen-- cannnot open volume for access. It quits its
disk check and xp opens. Went to 'search' o se of I could fix it but it just gave me instructions on 'how to perform a disk check for errors which I followed to no avail.
It's never done this before-had no problem checking the disk for errors. In fact, it would take at least 20 min. to do the check w/ 80gig drive.
How do I resolve this so I can keep my hard drive rinning well? Thanks KDR

For ntdll.dll problem...

Start | Run | Type: sfc /scannow | OK
Have your XP CD ready to stick in your CD drive.

If you have XP Home and it asks for your XP Pro Cd, stick the CD in the
drive *first* and then type the command.

scannow sfc (sfc.exe)

For Chkdisk problem..........

Do you have ZoneAlarm 5 ??

[[Since the new version 5.0 of TrueVector accesses the disk so early in the
boot-sequence, CHKDISK cannot run with the /F option at boot-time, because
it needs to access the disk directly.]]

Uninstall ZA5 and install an earlier version.

Or get the ZA update that *fixes* this problem.
