Explorer.exe crashes when accessing My Computer (ntdll.dll)

This problem started two days ago. I'm the only one that uses this system
and I haven't installed anything in over a month. I have Microsoft auto
update enabled.

Here's what's happening and what I've tried so far.

When I open explorer.exe and go to My Computer Explorer locks up and
generates the following error report:

AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 000118d0

I can open, edit and save anything in My Documents without any problem, it's
just anytime I try to access the C or E drive in My Computer then
Explorer.exe will crash.

I searched the board and tried:
- system restore
- start.run, SFC /SCANNOW
everything except the format and start over option...

Anyone ever fixed this problem without re-installing?

Any other ideas on what to try?

Thanks!

nass,

Thanks for the thorough response. I already tried some but not all of your
suggestions. I'll give the rest a shot tonight.

nass,

I ran everything from your post and was not able to resolve the problem. I
tried to run the OS Repair and it bombed out saying it couldn't find any hard
drives when I selected the repair option. I can boot up and run the PC no
problems so not sure how too continue here besides a full format.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Yeah, backup first your data then try to perform a clean install if you
cannot copy the file to the directory from RC.
