While doing a search Explorer hangs and a Window pops up which shows My
Documents with the message "PLease locate the volume number 1" and it is
looking for type: Backup Archive. I have to use Task Manager to end it.
How can this be corrected?

Try this using Search Companion:
Start/Search/Change Preferences/With Indexing Service/NO

Method 3 won't work because it wants old files from a previous service pack.
I tried reinstalling using Srchasst.inf and had trouble finding the required
balloon.xsl, nls302.en.lex, rover.acs, and msgr3en.dll. I located them on my
system and used them. (The msgr3en.dll was in my Service Pack files.) The
problem still exists. Perhaps one of the files I had to use was corrupt but
it would be difficult to find and download all new copies.
Please note that the search function of the other user on this system works
perfectly.
Perhaps you could advise which files to copy from that user to correct mine.

Perhaps a corrupt profile. Try creating another profile. Don't delete the old
profile until you are sure the new one is working and the files from the old
profile are properly transfered.

I would rather not change my profile. Do you have any other suggestions.
Perhaps there is some error in the registry which could be edited?

Issue resolved Oct 10. Regedit find located "Volume Number 1" in
HKey-Users/Software/Microsoft/SearchAssistant/ACMru/5603.
A cleanup of temp files and other unneeded files removed that reference and
problem was gone.
