Explorer hangs or Freezes

After opening Explorer, the home page loads fine. Clicking
on a link, or even typing in a new url, 90% of the time
will freeze or hang up the page. Now I have AOL as my
internet connection, dial-up, and have heard that may be
the problem, but it has never been so to date.
Run win XP-SP1, 512 Ram.
Any help would be great, thank you
