Explorer hangs browsing local drives

Windows Explorer hangs when I try to explore local
drives. I can explore the network and drives and even
mapped drives with no problem. It just hangs when I try
to access a local drive letter.

Once I explore a network drive, and then a mapped drive
and then explore a local drive, it takes about 10 minutes
and then seems to 'jump start' and allows me to browse
local drives with ease.

What's going on here?!?! Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sorry no solution here but sympathy as I have the same problem. I tried
deleting all shares/network places which seems to help a bit but not for
long. I tried several suggestions from other places including registry
changes but nothing really works. Explorer just takes ages to refresh
folder listings (intermittently) and I can't see whats causing it. Task
manager shows 99% system Idle process.
