Strange HD problem: file transfer hangs.

HD = WDCaviar Black 1TB used as external.
External enclosure = Thermaltake BlacX open port (supposed to work with up
to 1TB drives.

Issue: Transferring multiple files ( zip files in quaintly more than 50
files, 10 to 100 MB each) hangs Explorer. Eventually I have to restart the
computer because Explorer can't be terminated. Sometimes I get 50% transfer
before the transfer hangs, sometimes 10-20, but it invariably does hang.
Strangely, transferring files from the drive to another drive does not end
up with this problem, no matter how many files I transfer.
I did check the drive with chkdsk and other utilities and no problem was
found.

There's another drive (500GB) I use with that port and I had no transfer
issues with it.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Can you hook the drive up internally, or at least directly to motherboard?
If so, try transferring to it that way and see if it works. If it checks out
OK, then it's probably a problem with the external enclosure. Maybe it
supposed to work up to 1TB, but it may be right at the limit. Are there any
jumpers or software settings that can be changed?

Thanks, Tom. There's no jumpers present and no other software. I'll try
hooking it up directly to theinternal SATA chip and see what happens.

So, putting it inside the box cured the problem. I guess the enclosure is
incompatible.

Maybe you can get your money back, or even exchange for one that's more
compatible. At least it's not the drive; probably cheaper to replace the
enclosure.
