I made a shortcut on desktop to Local Disk C: but
when I click on this shortcut, only one pane appears
and I have to click "Folders" to show both panes. Is
there some way to ensure that both panes are
visible when it starts? (Doesn't bother me - it's the
wife who's complaining)

Ray, I'm puzzled, did you just happen to know the answer? - or
perhaps you searched the MS database? Is it possible for me to
download the database or parts of it, just to peruse?

Anyway, your answer really worked well.

This particular one, yes, but only because I've used it many times.

I searched the KB with "explorer command line switches" to find the article
in order to provide the link.

You can search the Microsoft Knowledge Base at
http://support.microsoft.com/. It is not really the best search around, and
it can often be frustrating. An alternate option is to use Google to search
the KB. You can do that by using a search phrase (at google.com) like so:

explorer command line switches site:support.microsoft.com
