explorer.exe needs to restart error

S

SteveF2

I am running a new dell (high spec) PC to run a weather station and webcam to
my web site. The PC has a dell windows XP pro standard build and is running
24/7. Two items of software analyse the weather data and ftp images to the
site and have a web server serving images to the site.

I have installed a plug and play PCI card to connect a surveillance camera
too but haven't yet connected the camera. Following installation of the card
video and audio drivers install as expected. Device manager shows these to
be working correctly. A number of these share an IRQ.

The weather station uses RS232 serial communication which is fed through a
Serial to USB cable to connect to a USB port.

The PC runs for a period typically over 12 hours and then returns a
"explorer.exe has experienced a problem and needs to close" error. This
dialogue hangs waiting for a response. When the dialogue closes the weather
station software has closed. The camera software is still running.

I would be grateful to know what causes this error and for any specific
guidance on what could be causing the problem on my setup.

Many thanks

This can Indicate a BHO is corrupted or damaged and causing the Shell error,
so try to Disable the Un-verified Add-Ons on your Browser and see if that
will help.

*Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet

On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:

Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.

Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it
later for this step to copy the error message on it.
Open a run command and type in:

click on each of these:

Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow

Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad
you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from
the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad.
Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.

Steve

How much RAM memory?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 4 processes using the largest amounts?

Please provide this information for shortly after booting and say 12
hours later without a reboot in between.

Are you running Site Advisor from McAfee?

Hope this helps.

I am running a new dell (high spec) PC to run a weather station and
webcam to my web site. The PC has a dell windows XP pro standard
build and is running 24/7. Two items of software analyse the
weather data and ftp images to the site and have a web server
serving images to the site.

I have installed a plug and play PCI card to connect a surveillance
camera too but haven't yet connected the camera. Following
installation of the card video and audio drivers install as
expected. Device manager shows these to be working correctly. A
number of these share an IRQ.

The weather station uses RS232 serial communication which is fed
through a Serial to USB cable to connect to a USB port.

The PC runs for a period typically over 12 hours and then returns a
"explorer.exe has experienced a problem and needs to close" error.
This dialogue hangs waiting for a response. When the dialogue
closes the weather station software has closed. The camera
software is still running.

I would be grateful to know what causes this error and for any
specific guidance on what could be causing the problem on my setup.

Many thanks

This can Indicate a BHO is corrupted or damaged and causing the
Shell error, so try to Disable the Un-verified Add-Ons on your

Two pages
Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the

Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be
sufficient. HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in

Please we need just the error messages with Red (X) and don't repeat

Your system has a considerable amount of RAM. The commit charge figures
are high but they are by no means exceptional. However, the Event Viewer
Reports referring to hung applications are indicating a system under
stress.

In your original post you indicated that the machine is running 24/7,
which means that if there are any memory leaks the system can run out of
memory. Restarting a computer releases memory not released by a
programme, even if it has been closed. Also you mentioned a web camera
which brings graphics into play and programmes associated with this
activity can demand large amounts of memory. You also have McAfee
installed, which has a large footprint, and if it initiates a scan to
coincide with camera activity this will cause high peak demands.

Your subject refers to an explorer.exe report, which seems to be an
obscure error. This is the Error Report:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: 12/12/2007
Time: 07:42:31
User: N/A
Computer: RVSCWEATHER
Description:
Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.3156, faulting
module msctf.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00034743.

How many times has this error appeared in the Application Log over the
last 10 days?

Can you please post some further commit charge figures so that I can
compare them with those already provided.

Will you please answer my earlier question. "You should be able to
gather more information from Task Manager. With the Processes tab open
select View, Select, Columns and check the >> boxes before Peak Memory
Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures for the 4 processes
using the largest amounts?

What is the precise McAfee product you have installed?

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry
I have had some success today. I cleared a number of issues raised in
nass's post but had one of my applications (vws) drop out. I disabled the
roxio applications and the PC ran without error all day.

Yesterdays top four (by VM) where
McShield Peak 64192 VM 33932
VWS Peak 20132 VM 52468
ImageSalsa Peak 18860 VM 56440
RTHDCPL Peak 22188 VM 22644

Today top four (By VM) where
ImageSalsa Peak 18408 VM 56384
VWS Peak 19560 VM 54420
McShield Peak 64148 VM 33104
RTHDCPL Peak 21848 VM 23600

Today Commit figures
Total 409904
Limit 4032784
Peak 637936

I haven't attached my camera at present but Imagesalsa has a webserver
running which serves a static jpeg until I attach the camera.

The McAfee product is the Security Centre
I have had 4 instances of the explorer.exe error in the 10 days I have had
this PC.
None in last 24 hours.

I have consulted the support forum for VWS and ther is some past history of
incompatability with some graphics and sound cards but I thinks it should be
possible to make this combination works together.

Thanks for your help

So good progress at the moment, thanks.

Glad that there is some progress, you can either check with the Roxio Help
and support about this issue or try to get the latest updates for Roxio.
Also if you updated your Media Player to Media11 you can experience some
issue too with your burning software like Roxio or Nero.
Keep an eye for the next few days for the Event log and see which app will
misbehave or conflict.
Try to configure the Security suite for mcafee to scan the system when there
is no lots of traffics or lots of applications running like the Images
software and the Camera which resource Hog.
Thanks for your feedback and you are welcome.

nass

This can happen if the Software buggy or incompatible with your system, try
to update the software or uninstall it then remove all debris left behind and
run the system for a while without it and monitor the changes!.

Hi Steve,
First try to search the directories for the cvirte.dll file and Note the
Date and version of each. If you have multiple version delete all but leave
the latest version ( please note down the location where you will delete the
old version, you will may need to copy and paste the latest version to these
places/directories).
or you can re-regiter this dll by this command:
regsvr32 cvirte.dll click [OK] and reboot the system.

http://ambientweather.wikispaces.co...esponseToken=624a26364df03da049347879b8350718

Another is to avoid running a Beta Product on your productive machine,
unless you are a tester, you don't have/need to run a Beta product at all,
Microsoft always worn against such a thing when they issue a Beta version of
their product.
If the software company has a Stable version why not Opt to get it as you
will have full support and compatible version!.
Does this App need to run on a specific .Net framework and need to be
downloaded from Ms site?.
Best if you contact the Help& Support for ambientweather as they will be
happy to know and help out, it is stated on the link above after performing
the steps mentioned on their troubleshooting procedure.
