explorer.exe is crashing

Hello All,

I have inherited a 2000 server SP4 that has issues. One of the issues is
that explorer.exe will crash:

when I right click the start menu, explorer
-then close the documents&settings folder
-the screen flashes blank
-the background reappers
-then the desktop with desktop icons but no explorer window

I have looked in EV with nothing in the App folder at the sametime!

ANY ideas are welcomed.
