explorer.exe error when adding TCP/IP port

G

Gregg

Windows 2K Pro SP4
Error when attempted to create TCP/IP port when adding an
HP network printer. After typing IP address into box in
TCP/IP port wizard and hitting next I get error message
that explorer.exe has had an error. The explorer quits.
When I install HP Network Printer installer, there is a
new port that shows up: HP Standard TCP/IP Port
I get a different error - Instead of explorer quitting,
the HP installer quits. Same problem when I let the HP
installer do its thing.

An older posting had same issue. Microsoft replied, but
their suggestion did not work. Any other thoughts (other
than wiping windows and starting over).

Thanks,
Gregg

Look for a user.dmp file with a timestamp when the failure occurs. If it is
there open the file with a command line utility with the name ntsd.exe (I
know this is in system32 on XP, not sure on Win2k) useage ntsd -z user.dmp.
Type k and there will be a list of modules at the faulting point. Send that
back this way

0:004> k
