explorer error

George J. Malmos

WinXP Home on AMD 2.0 CPU with 1024 MB memory & 38+ GB of free HD
space, windows Explorer frequently crashes on right click and other
routine file processing activity, especially when involving USB zip
drive. HD searching with adaware,spy-sweeper & my virus program
reveals no pests, virus or trojans. Newsgroups scoured for a solution,
but none found. Can someone help?
Here's what Windows' system event viewer states about this problem:

Hi,

Please follow these methods one by one and see after each step if the
problem is gone.

Method 1:
=========
Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

1. Click Start ->Run.
2. Type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
3. Select the OK button.
4. Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
5. Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.

Method 2:
=========

1. Click Start -> Run
2. Type the following command
3. "rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%windir%\inf\ie.inf"
4. When prompted for the CD, Insert the windows XP cd

This fixes most problems. If not, see below the KB Article:

Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

Method 3:
========
Start the system in normal mode.

1. Click Start -> Run
2. Type "MSConfig" and click OK.
3. In the "System Configuration Utility" windows select the "Startup" tab
and click on Disable All
4. Now reboot and start IE without connecting to Internet

Do you get any error message? If the answer is "No", then enable each
application by checking one by one and trace out the problem.

Method 4:
=========
Create a new user and check if same problem occurs for the new user as
well. If the answer is "NO", then copy all the files from the old user to
the newly created user.

Please check the KB Article # 811151"How to copy data from a corrupted user
profile to a new profile"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;811151

Hope this helps ...... :)

I picked up this thread because I have precisely the same problem with a PC I
recently built installing Windows XP. I made 3 PC's at the time, each with
its own, clean, licensed & activated copy of XP but my PC is the only one
with this problem. They are all using AMD Athlons but with different brands
of motherboard.

Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600, SP1
Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106 (IE 6.0 SP1)
DirectX 4.09.00.0902 (DirectX 9.0b)

Motherboard:
CPU Type AMD Athlon XP-A, 1833 MHz (11 x 167) 2500+
Motherboard Name Gigabyte GA-7N400E-L (5 PCI, 1 AGP, 4 DIMM, Audio, LAN)
Motherboard Chipset nVIDIA nForce2 400
System Memory 512 MB (PC2700 DDR SDRAM)
BIOS Type Award Modular (06/16/04)

Display:
Video Adapter RADEON 9600 SERIES - Secondary (128 MB)

I have tried solution 1 to no avail. I ran solution 2 but during the
process received this error message which may be relevant:
"fixmapi.exe Entry point not found. The procedure entry point
WNetEnumCachedPasswords could not be located in the dynamic link library file
MPR.dll"

I will try your other solutions.

I note that your references are to Internet Explorer repair and NOT to
Windows Explorer i.e. Explorer.exe. Is that significant?

This problem is so widely reported in news groups and forums that I am
astonished to find no returns when I try searching the MS KNowledge Base. I
never had anything like this in my earlier Windows OS's and it has I regret
to say, inclined me to brand Windows XP as being as bug ridden as the earlier
Windows OS's. It is very frustrating and makes it hard to concentrate on the
real jobs we are trying to do.

Hi,

The error "WNetEnumCachedPasswords" states that you have incorrect version
of MAPI32.DLL. Please rename your MAPI32.DLL file then run FixMAPI.EXE and
reboot. The "fixmapi.exe" repair tool is located in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
directory.

Hope this helps ...... :)

Hi,

The message refers like one or more files are either missing or corrupt.
Try disabling all running programs (especially antivirus software) and run
this
from the Start -> Run menu:

"rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
C:\Windows\inf\ie.inf"

Note: I have replaced the parameter %windir% with C:\Windows assuming that
XP is installed on C Drive in the Windows FOLDER.

You may be asked to locate a file (iEXPLORE) which should be under the i386
directory on the XP disc.

This should reinstall IE6 and replace any missing or bad files.

OR

If the above setup fails with the same error message, proceed as follows:
1. Open Windows Explorer and go to the directory C:\Windows\inf
2. Locate the "ie.inf" file and right mouse click it, then select Install
from the menu.

If you still get the error message, post back to this thread.

Hope this helps ...... :)

- - Thanks for advice. I did just as you said and the new mapi32.dll is
nested

Thanks for reply. Ran OK this time. It will take a little time to see
whether the Explorer crashes have been fixed. Thanks for help throughout.

I did just as you said and the new mapi32.dll is
nested
- - in the System32 folder. When I then tried running the string in
soilution 2
- - starting "rundll32.exe setupapi,Install etc" I got this error message:
- -
- - "Error in setupapi. Missing entry: InstallHinfSection""
- -
- - Are you able to tell me what this means please?
